Journal Entry: February 16, 2026
Location: Ar's Station / Lara II
Mood/Title: Scribe Dealings, Academy Recruits, and Lectures
Today was an incredibly active day filled with teaching, networking, and the persistent business of being a Magistrate. I encountered a man named Das Dibou who made a rather clumsy attempt at requesting forged free papers for an unnamed slave. I swiftly reminded him that, as a Magistrate, I require proof of manumission from an owner and do not take bribes. My warning seemed to register, and he quickly departed.
Shortly after, I met a Northern woman named Runa Stormdottir. She expressed interest in the Scribe caste and settling in Ar's Station with her mate. We discussed the possibility of her and her mate starting a city newspaper. I directed her to speak with Sphere, our Head of Caste, to officially join our ranks.
Later, I traveled to Lara II to deliver my lecture on the Natural Order, distinguishing the roles and expectations between Free Women and Kajirae. It is always a complex topic for Earth-born to grasp, but the class was attentive. A man named Vedek Ireto also submitted his petition assignment.
Upon returning to Ar's Station, I met with Shania Shiras and helped her set up her displays at the Academy. I then attended an excellent lecture on the Governance of Torvaldsland hosted by Lady BilliAnn at the Gorean Campus. The day concluded with a brief visit from Kaellaed Rhode and his slave, Laela. Kaell expressed interest in relocating to Ar's Station and potentially teaching at the Academy. I encouraged him to speak with Asher regarding housing and look forward to potentially working with him.
Class Summary: Governance of Torvaldsland (Taught by Lady BilliAnn)
Resource Scarcity: Torvaldsland is a resource-poor region, heavily reliant on Southern imports (like wood for ships), making a unified Northern conquest of the South highly unlikely.
The High Jarl: The highest authority, currently Svein Blue Tooth. He commands immense power (thousands of men and ships) but governs through counsel, not absolute dictatorship.
Local Leaders: Individual holds and villages are governed by Jarls or Chieftains.
The Assembly (The Thing): A governing body of free men (Jarls, Chieftains, Rune-Priests, etc.) who deliberate on laws, disputes, and foreign demands (like those of the Kurii). The "Peace of the Thing" ensures safe passage for all attendees, even enemies.
Social Hierarchy & Rank: Ranks are distinguished by "talmits" (headbands denoting specific roles like Jarl or lawman) and seating placements relative to the salt bowls in the great halls.
Non-BtB Concepts: Ranks like "First Ax" or the concept of political governance by "Clans" are not supported by the books.
Class Summary: The Natural Order (Taught by Lady Kati)
Biological Roles: Goreans embrace biological realities—men are naturally dominant (hunters, protectors), and women are naturally submissive (nurturers, yielders).
The Free Woman (Citizen): Protected by High Law, concealed by veils to preserve her beauty for her family/Companion. She has legal rights (property, contracts) but remains under male guardianship for protection. Virtue and dignity are demanded; acting vulgarly risks her status.
The Kajira (Slave): Legally classified as a domestic animal with no rights, property, or identity beyond her Master's will. Her sole purpose is obedience. This absolute surrender is viewed by many as "Perfect Freedom" from the anxieties and responsibilities of free life.
Social Boundaries: Strict barriers separate Free Persons and Slaves. Slaves do not initiate contact, avoid eye contact, and use specific titles ("Master," "Mistress"). Masters are held legally and financially liable for the actions of their slaves.
To Do:
Review the "Petition to Magistrate" assignment submitted by Vedek Ireto.
Follow up with Kaellaed Rhode regarding his move and teaching topics.
Keep an eye out for Runa Stormdottir to see if she and her mate decide to start the local paper.
