The Burden of Command and the Art of Expression - March 3

Journal Entry: March 3, 2026

Location: Ar's Station / Lara II / Gorean Campus

Mood/Title: The Burden of Command and the Art of Expression

The day began with a series of meaningful connections and a deepening of the Academy’s academic structure. I spent time in Ar's Station meeting with Vougan, a newcomer and newly appointed Record Keeper. We toured each other's offices and homes, and our conversation turned to family; I was surprised to learn that he is the father of the three sons belonging to my friend Bea. It is a small world within the Station, and staying close to family is a value we both clearly share.

Later, I traveled to Lara II to deliver my eighth lecture in the introductory series. The session, titled "Warriors and Warfare," drew a respectful crowd including Lady Jacquie and Nahir El Khamsin. We explored the heavy psychological and social weight carried by the Scarlet Caste, distinguishing the disciplined Warrior from the common killer. The students were particularly fascinated by the mechanics of the Gorean Phalanx and the terrifying presence of the Tarns in aerial combat.

In the evening, I attended a most intriguing Roleplay Workshop at the Gorean Campus hosted by Master Ben Huntsman. The class used the "Emotion Thesaurus" as a foundation to discuss "Method Acting" in roleplay. Master Ben emphasized that true immersion comes from understanding and emoting the 93% of communication that is nonverbal—facial expressions, internal sensations like a racing heart, and instinctive physical responses. It was a refreshing reminder to even the most seasoned of us that our characters are driven by the core of their emotional journeys.

Class Summary: Warriors and Warfare (Taught by Lady Kati)

  • The Scarlet Caste: Analyzed as the "flesh walls" of the city. We distinguished the Warrior from the mercenary, emphasizing that a true Warrior fights for the Home Stone and lives by the rigid Code of the Sword, fearing shame far more than death.

  • The Intellectual Warrior: Challenged the misconception of Warriors as uneducated brutes. They are scholars of strategy, logic, and even poetry, using Kaissa to sharpen their tactical minds.

  • The Ubarate: Explained the "Kill Switch" in Gorean politics where civil law is suspended and a War Master (Ubar) is appointed with absolute authority during a crisis.

  • The Tarn: Described as the predatory cavalry of Gor. We discussed their role in reconnaissance, messaging, and the brutal nature of three-dimensional aerial combat where riders are strapped to their mounts in a commitment to the death.

  • Infantry Tactics: Focused on the Phalanx and the Gladius (short sword). The short blade is used for efficiency in tight shield-wall formations, making the front line a literal "Killing Zone."

  • Siege Warfare: Discussed Circumvallation (walling around a city) and the use of starvation and heavy engines (catapults/ballistae) as intimate and brutal tools of war.

To Do:

  • Review the raw logs provided by Kash from Master Nero’s recent class to stay informed on other teachings in the city.

  • Research the "Canoe Route" more thoroughly, perhaps consulting with Asher or Magnus regarding its history and logistical impact on the Station.

  • Prepare for next week’s 100-level Academy class on "Geography and Environmental Studies."

  • Continue refining the search titles in the Station Academy Library to improve functionality for the students.
