Title: The Chaos of the Fair and the Road Ahead
The En'Kara Fair has officially begun, and the energy is as overwhelming as it is exhilarating. I spent the early hours navigating the sprawling grounds, collecting several new scrolls and books for my personal archives, including Gorean cookbooks and specialized texts on poetry and fauna. Getting around is a challenge; the signs are not as clear as they could be, and for someone directionally challenged like Shania, it is quite intimidating. I was grateful to run into her earlier; she was kind enough to share a map of the grounds she received from Drusus, which will be a lifesaver this week.
While meandering through the Southeast and Southwest sectors, I poked my head into the Scribe Caste of Gor tent. I was pleased to see a robust calendar and a well-stocked collection of books. I encountered Mael Brigantes there, who shared some rather colorful family history involving his mate Madeleine and their children. It seems everyone has a history that eventually catches up with them at these fairs. I also had a lovely breakfast at a local cafe, where I met a newly arrived and quite malnourished slave boy named Sicinnus. After ensuring he was fed and watered, I instructed him to remain at my heel for the time being to ensure his safety while we find him a place in the city.
Back at the Academy, the day was dedicated to the first session of the 201 Series: War and Politics. We delved into the "Imperial Experiment" of Marlenus of Ar, discussing the transition from a civil Administration to the absolute power of an Ubarate. Duncan Willis was particularly attentive, even submitting his role-play assignment on the "Declaration of Emergency." It is rewarding to see the students grappling with these complex themes of power and sovereignty.
Class Summary: The Imperial Experiment (201 Series, Week 2)
The Marlenian Thesis: We analyzed how Marlenus sought to unify the squabbling city-states into a single Imperium to establish a "Pax Goreana." This required the destruction of local sovereignty in favor of a central authority.
Economic Hegemony: We discussed how Ar used its silver mines to flood smaller cities with Ar’s currency, effectively seizing their economic sovereignty before a single arrow was fired.
The Debt Trap: We explored how Ar offered "protection loans" for infrastructure, which were eventually used to force smaller cities into "Client Status" when they could not pay the interest.
Military Standardization: Marlenus transformed the military from feudal levies into a professional standing army with uniform equipment and training, utilizing the Doctrine of Overwhelming Force.
Sociological Failure: We concluded by discussing why the empire fell. Marlenus treated the Home Stone as a trophy rather than a spiritual anchor, leading to hostiles occupations and supply lines that eventually bled Ar dry.
To Do:
Review the En'Kara schedule for the Scribe Tent and finalize my own presentation timing.
Continue sorting and indexing the 4,420 library items to resolve the script access issues.
Grade the Policy Brief assignments regarding the occupation of Vipra.
Keep a close eye on the boy Sicinnus; his strength is returning, but he remains very confused.
